Ozone: An Emerging Star For Disinfection

There are many places around the country where water shortage is a big issue. Water is the most precious resource we have, and in light of the shortage, people have started trying to investigate creative ways of ‘what’s my next water resource,’ Chris Milligan, vice president, director of engineering with BlueInGreen, told Water Online Radio in an interview.

His company, as a whole, provides side stream gas dissolution technologies. So, they are dissolving oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ozone into water for a host of water and wastewater treatment applications.

Milligan told us that the industry has ‘basically come full circle’ and now customers are looking the concept of water reuse, and also at wastewater treatment plants that discharge higher quality water than what’s flowing down the stream. There is a push towards ozone as a method of treatment, as besides just disinfecting the wastewater, ozone can remove contaminants like pharmaceutical compounds, hormones, and endocrine disruptors from the waste stream that otherwise would be in a concentration loop. Additionally, ozone gas is made, typically on site, through an oxygen and electrical process.
